LPGA Players Packing More Punch than Ever
No web link in this post, rather just a story. I recently saw an article in USA Today written by Steve DiMeglio. When discussing technological advances in sports, in my past posts I have mainly discussed the manner in which marketers disseminate their advertising message to their target market. In DiMeglio's article, however, it discusses the way that technological advances in the game of golf have increased the marketability of the Ladies' Professional Golf Association Tour. Technological advances in golf clubs have increased the distance in which women golfers hit the ball on their tee shots. "Karin Sjodin set an LPGA tour record in average driving distance at 284.5 yards. The leader the year before? Brittany Lincicome at 270.3 yards. That's a 5.25% increase in 12 months." (DiMeglio 2007). I think that is amazing. But I guess it does make sense that not only the women, but the men's tour would experience a greater interest in the game with players hitting drives of amazing distances. I can't think of another way technology has increased the marketability of a women's tour or sport, can anyone else?

I think it is amazing as well that the advancements have helped with the marketing of the LPGA. Any kind publicity that women's sports receive is good. As far as technology increasing the marketability of other sports, I think being able to access scores and games through cell phones, ipods, etc. has drastically changed sports. There have been multiple times that I wouldn't go places because of a game. Now that I can have updated scores whenever I want is a bonus.
I think the advancement in technology has myabe not increased the marketability of sports, but rather changed sports to cater people.
I liked what hossette had to say. Technology has without a doubt chnaged the accessibility of information for womens sport. For example, last week as I was leaving work I heard the PA announcer announcing the lineups for a womens softball game next door. Since I cant pass up a good gator chant on a Friday, I strolled on over to see what the deal was. After an exhilarating 4 innings of 1 hit ball for both teams, I had my fair share of fun for the day. When I got home, I wanted to check out the score. From Gatorzone.com, I was able to get the Game Tracker, where it showed updates for every pitch, pictures, season statistics for all the players, etc. etc. I was impressed because this feature used to not be available for softball back in the day.
